 Steve Rennie on Pebble Beach

I’d like to introduce you to a good friend, Steve Rennie. He is the manager of the US band INCUBUS (Their album ‘Morning View’ is a must have!) – He lives a fascinating life fuelled by music and golf. Steve took Aaron and I out for a game at Bel-Air a few years back and we had so much fun. Steve’s knowledge of music and golf is unmatched; however it is his killer story telling skills that always leaves you in stiches. I knew as soon as Aaron qualified for the U.S Open Championship at Pebble Beach the best person who would be able to sum everything up would be Steve...

I’ve had the good fortune to play Pebble Beach over 50 times and it never ceases to amaze me. I’m in awe of the place. You see Pebble Beach is not just a golf course. It’s a masterpiece. It’s a national treasure. It’s a living, breathing, painting that could only have been painted by the hand of God himself.  Nobody designed it. You can’t design the 7th and 8th hole at Pebble. You can’t move enough earth to shape the 18th hole. It was a gift to all of us golfers. We are all just lucky that we found it and get to experience its majesty.

I can’t think of a better place for Aaron to win another national championship. I know he’s got 2 back home in Australia but he makes his home now in the States.  An American wife and now 2 American kids. What he needs now is a National Championship in his adopted home. A national champion crowned at Pebble Beach.  Remembered forever. Who can forget Jack Nicklaus’ soaring 1 iron at #17 that I watched as a kid. Or Tom Watson’s chip at 17. Or Tigers Woods’ 7 iron from the bottom of the hill on #6 on the way to a 15 shot victory. I’ll never forget the image of Jack staring into the bay on the 18th hole as he played his last round there and the heir apparent to his throne striding down #1.

Pebble Beach has got history. It has tradition. It has drama at every turn. Pebble Beach creates snapshots for a lifetime. The greatest champions that ever played the game won at Pebble Beach. If I had one last breath to take or one last putt to make, I’ll take it at Pebble Beach. Badds, I must confess that I’m a little jealous of you. I’ll only be watching US Open week. You, my friend, get the opportunity to win a National Championship at Pebble Beach. Good luck to you. I know you can do it.

Cheers,

Ren

I doubt anyone could have said it better. I’d like to thank Steve for taking the time to share his thoughts with us. If you wanted to keep up with Steve and his golfing adventures, he has just started his own blog: http://theroadtolakenona.tumblr.com/
